Lara and Katrina turn down Govinda

Akshay and Katrina are such good friends that Katrina agreed to be his arm candy in De Dana Dan. However, she doesn’t share the same equation with her Partner co-star Govinda.

Govinda has had two flop films, Chal Chala Chal and Money Hain Toh Honey Hain. His last hit was Partner in 2007.

Obviously, he has high expectations from Life Partner which is produced by Abbas Mustan and directed by Rumi Jaffrey. He is the only senior member in the cast that comprises Fardeen Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Genelia D’Souza and Prachi Desai. All these actors don’t have star power as such. So for a promotional song, Govinda tried to his influence and contacts to rope in Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif but they both refused. The two actresses appeared on Koffee with Karan together and were last seen with Chi Chi in Partner. Also, Govinda is a good friend of Salman. He thought Katrina would agree because of the Salman connection but she refused citing date issues. Over the past month, she was busy with New York promotions, post production for Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani, a few endorsement events and then she left for Europe to celebrate her birthday. Katrina has never done item songs, anyway. She wants to be seen as a serious actress so why would she do item songs?

Lara Dutta who has also done the upcoming Do Knot Disturb and Banda yeh Bindaas Hai with Chi Chi refused citing date problems. She is currently in London shooting for Sajid Khan’s Housefull. The last item song Lara did was Aisa Jadoo Daala Re in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Khakee in 2004. It was a big hit. She was also part of Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi as no smart person would refuse SRK and YRF. The song is quite popular.

Since these ladies refused the song, they had to rope in wannabe hottie Amrita Rao of Shortkut (fame?) to do the item number. The music of Life Partner is not a rage at all.

What can we say, Govinda’s career is on the downslide and no one wants to work with a fallen star. And everyone isn’t as lucky and powerful as Shah Rukh Khan to get three stars for three different item songs as he did with Kareena, Priyanka and Deepika in Billu. Our advice to Chi Chi would be to do more films with David Dhawan and Salman Khan and lose some weight to get his career back on track.

The entire Kaif clan will gather together in London and then proceed to an undisclosed destination in Italy for a family holiday. “We net-searched, googled and finally found a place we wanted to visit, ” giggles Bollywood’s most googled girl. “It was tough because there was no place the entire family would agree on. Or if we all liked a place there was no vacancy. We finally found a place that we all liked.” Italy is a favourite spot. And Katrina is often mistaken to be Italian. But those are not the only reasons why she’s looking forward to the month-long holiday. This would be the longest time when Katrina would be away from Salman Khan and his family. And probably a time when she would do some serious rethinking about her life. Says Katrina, “Quite honestly I haven’t been with my whole family for a long time. I’ve been preparing for my holiday for ages. I’ve been working like a mad woman trying to finish all my work on time. It got specially hectic as the time for me to leave approached. I was dubbing for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and shooting two songs for Priyan’s De Dana Dan. At one point I thought I wouldn’t finish on time. But I did. And I’m really looking forward to my time with my family.” Katrina returns to Mumbai on 15 August, more than a month later. Her birthday plans are a surprise even to herself. “I know my sisters and brother have planned something. Let me enjoy the suspense.”

Katrina is in pain!

Here’s another name to the list of those injured on the sets of Priyadarshan’s De Dana Dan.

This time it’s Katrina, who injured her back on Tuesday, while shooting with Akshay Kumar. Incidentally, this is the second time she was injured on the film’s sets.

Earlier, it was Sunil Shetty who was hurt after accidentally hitting an iron rod during an underwater sequence. He took nearly six months to recover. In December last year, Katrina had wounded her leg.

Wincing in pain, Katrina said, “It was a typical baarish-mein-bheegi-sari song. And well, I danced over enthusiastically. It’s always disastrous when you bend your back without a preliminary warm-up. Despite knowing this, I foolishly bent my back on Akshay’s (Kumar) arm. And as soon as I did that, I felt something give way. Now, I can hardly move around without experiencing pain.”

Katrina insisted that the shoot mustn’t slow down just because of her. She is more than eager to wrap up the current schedule of De Dana Dan as soon as possible. “I want to go to London to join my family and then we’re all going to Italy for a holiday,” she said excitedly. Laughing off the observation that this is the most accident prone film she’s ever done, Katrina said, “Akshay says De Dana Dan will be a hit because we’ve given our blood for it.”

Kat doesn't need short skirts!

There’s additional security posted outside Katrina Kaif’s home.

Guess one can’t take chances with stalkers these days. The Bollywood sweetheart who is currently on a roll — yeah, she has just notched up another successful film — is jubilant.

Dressed in a pair of slim-fitting jeans and a pink tee-shirt, her pretty face devoid of pancake, she smiles, “At least they can’t say my latest film is doing well because Katrina Kaif wore a short skirt. I don’t need to show leg to win notices.’’
The actress doesn’t take kindly to being called Bollywood’s lucky mascot either.

“Saying I’m just lucky kind of annihilates all the hard work that I have put into my films,’’ she says. “It also derides the capability of my directors. A script makes a film work, a lot of hard work goes into getting the right script, and to just attribute a film’s success to my good-luck is not right.’’

Of course, she’d rather be called a lucky mascot than a jinx, but she says in her four years in Bollywood, she has strived to make things work. Today, she is in a cushy place. Even Kareena Kapoor, Bollywood’s No. 1 actress, concedes that Katrina is hot property, but Katz is definitely not resting on her laurels. “I’m not ruthlessly ambitious. But, there is greed in me to want to do better work. In that sense, I’m exactly like Akshay Kumar. I deeply admire that quality in him. He has done over a 100 films, yet Akshay still has the same hunger in him to strive to do better.’’

Katrina is no longer a girl in a hurry. She has just three films on the floor — De Dana Dan, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Rajniti. And though she can earn some megabucks really fast, the girl from London with her anglicised Hindi, who began her star trek with the unorthodox Boom, is taking it easy.

Fully aware that the competition — Kareena, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Asin — will eat her alive if she slips, Katz says, “Each successful film motivates me to work harder. For example, in Prakash Jha’s Rajniti I’m the sole girl with power-house performers like Naseeruddin Shah, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpai and Nana Patekar. Arjun Rampal and Ranbir Kapoor, my two other co-stars, are also very good actors and my immediate aim is to raise the bar as far as my performance goes.’’

Admitting that it was important just being a top hero’s arm candy in movies like Welcome, Singh is Kinng, Partner and Race to consolidate her position in Bollywood, she now wants to walk down the path of respected performers. Yeah, Katrina knows the length of her skirt can carry her only this far. If she wishes to go further, which she does, she must stand up and deliver.

Katrina Breaks Down: I can't believe I can act so well

Last week at a special screening of Kabir Khan�s New York Katrina Kaif broke down after she saw what was on screen. �It was embarrassing. This has never happened to me before. I was deeply moved by the film. And I couldn�t believe what my director Kabir Khan had achieved in my performance. I kept staring at myself. �That�s me!� I exclaimed at the end of the film.� This is the first time that Katrina has played a character who echoes her own personality. �So far all my characters have been pretty alien to me. Even the London girl in Chandigarh in Namaste London was not at all like me. But the girl in New York connects deeply with me. Or do I connect with her? It�s symbiotic, I think.� When he saw what synthesis of �actor� and �character� had been achieved she simply broke down. Remembering that evening Katrina says, �It was a very private screening. Only members of the cast, our director his wife, the producer and his wife were there. I�ve never been so impressed by any of my films. So far they�ve all been in the orbit of escapist entertainment. New York is my first realistic film.I�m proud of all my films. New York - Movie Review

By Taran Adarsh Rating: **** Myth: New York is about 9/11. Fact: It's not. But it reflects the mood that's prevalent across the globe, post 9/11. The world is divided today. No two opinions on that! Myth: New York bears a striking similarity to KHUDA KAY LIYE. Fact: Nope. KHUDA KAY LIYE and New York may belong to the same family, of an innocent person being picked up for questioning after the WTC catastrophe, but the similarities end there. In fact, KHUDA KAY LIYE and New York are as diverse as chalk and cheese. New York, helmed by Kabir Khan, attempts to be as real as possible. A tale of friendship, with terrorism as the wallpaper, New York hits you like a ton of bricks at several points in the narrative. In fact, there was a possibility that New York may turn out to be a dry experience, a documentary perhaps, but the drama is so well structured and so gripping that you get sucked into the world of Sam, Omar and Maya from its inception. New York is a triumph for Kabir Khan, who deserves distinction marks for handling the subject with remarkable maturity. Also, this film should be a turning point for John, Katrina and Neil. More on that later... The verdict? New York is, without doubt, one of the finest films produced by this premier production house, Yash Raj. Grab a ticket today! Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) has gone abroad for the first time in his life and soon enough, he begins to see and love America through the eyes of his American friends, Sam (John Abraham) and Maya (Katrina Kaif). But an incident changes the world round them. At this point enters Agent Roshan (Irrfan), an FBI agent, who sets the ball rolling for a series of tumultuous events that turn the lives of these friends upside down. New York affects you like no other Hindi film has done so far (on 9/11). In fact, there are portions that give you goose bumps, especially towards the second half of the film, when John recounts his past. One of the reasons why New York works is because not once does Kabir Khan borrow from the past or tilt towards predictable stuff. You just can't guess what and where the story is headed and what the culmination would be. The director and his team of writers establish the plot and characters beautifully, but the real action is reserved for the second half. The nightmarish experience that John undergoes is disturbing, but lifts the film several notches up. But New York has its share of loose ends. The film dips in the second hour. It tends to gets lengthy before it reaches a powerful, brilliantly executed climax. Also, a few sequences only add to the length of the film, which could've been curtailed in the writing stage itself. Director Kabir Khan picks up a real incident -- innocent civilians being suspected as terrorists, soon after 9/11 -- and weaves a brilliant tale around it. The screenplay is its biggest star, without a doubt. Given the fact that New York isn't one of those routine masala fares, Kabir has injected songs only when required. Cinematography is striking. Now here's another surprise. John, Katrina and Neil, all actors, deliver their career-best performance. If the first half belongs to Neil, John takes over the second hour completely. John is superb when he recalls the past. You can feel his pain, that effective is his performance. Also, note his expressions towards the end. This is a different John, for sure. Just one word for his performance -- fabulous! Neil was remarkable in JOHNNY GADDAAR, but disappointed in AA DEKHEN ZARA. Fortunately, he's in top form this time around. Katrina gives you the biggest surprise. Known for her glamour roles, Katrina proves that she can deliver if the director and writer offer her a role of substance. She's outstanding. In fact, people will see a new, different Katrina this time. Irrfan is, as always, first-rate. On the whole, New York is amongst the finest films produced by Yash Raj. At the box office, there's no stopping this one. Go for it now!

Salman will not be seeing New York

Salman Khan is in no mood to see “New York”, even though girlfriend and lead actress of the film Katrina Kaif is trying desperately to convince him to watch the film.

Katrina’s performance in the movie has been well appreciated and hence she is keen Sallu sees her latest film. But Salman is said to have flatly refused.

According to close sources from Katrina’s end, the actress is hurt by Salman’s policy of ignoring all her films, even though she makes it a point to watch all his movies and even attend his premieres and special screenings.

Salman does watch movies in general but when it comes to watching Katrina’s films he refuses to see them.

If sources close to Salman are to be believed, Salman does not like his girlfriend’s physical proximity with co-stars. He is very possessive about her and can’t see her with someone else, even on screen.

In fact, it’s said that he does not even like Katrina wearing any revealing clothes in real life. And if he sees her wearing something he doesn’t approve of, he asks her to change.

Both Katrina, Kareena have sexy bodies, says Akshay

Action king can’t decide who’s better

Akshay Kumar has worked with both Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in several films, but can't decide who is better. The action king says both are "wonderful actresses" and have "sexy bodies".

"Both Kareena and Katrina are really good but who is the better among them depends on their roles in the films. Otherwise, both of them have sexy bodies and are absolutely wonderful actresses," said Akshay when asked to choose his favourite of the two.

Akshay has done four films with Katrina including "Namastey London" and "Singh Is Kinng", while he has worked with Kareena in five that include hits "Ajnabee" and "Aitraaz". The two are set to scorch the screen once again in their upcoming action-cum-romantic drama "Kambakkht Ishq", which releases on Friday.

"In 'Kambakkht Ishq', Kareena has performed very well. Her character required to answer back at me and be strong and she has portrayed it in a powerful, yet lovable way. On the other hand, even Katrina was really good in 'Namastey London'. So it's not really about my choice... it all depends on their roles," the actor told IANS over phone from Puerto Rico, where he is on a holiday.

Akshay, who has spent more than 18 years in the Hindi film industry, says acting with a new league of actresses is a learning experience.

"As a senior actor, I don't always have to give out tips to the younger ones. In fact, I feel I can learn a lot from the younger generation because they have new ways of acting and a different approach to work.

"I cannot particularly point out what I have learnt from them (Kareena and Katrina) yet, but yes, working with them was a learning experience," said the actor, who has also teamed up with Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Ayesha Takia.

Akshay plays a Hollywood stuntman in "Kambakkht Ishq", which also boasts of big Hollywood names like Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh - working with whom has been a "dream come true" for the actor.

In the film, Akshay has done what he is best at - action and daredevilry - something that had taken a backseat in his career for a while.

"I decided to stop doing stunts till Aarav (son) turns at least six. Now I'm back at it again. In 'Blue', which is an action thriller, I have done some death-defying stunts like the one where I had to swim 150 feet underwater with 30-40 sharks. But I will talk about it sometime later," he said.

At the moment, the 41-year-old actor is pinning hopes on Sajid Nadiadwala's "Kambakkht Ishq" to bail him out after his much-publicised films "Chandni Chowk To China" and "8X10 Tasveer" fizzled out at the box office.

"I'm expecting great response for this film. Though I had worked very hard in 'Chandni Chowk...' , the response didn't turn out to be as expected. Some people and critics didn't like it and '8X10 Tasveer' was more like an art film, which has a niche market in India. 'Kambakkht Ishq' is a complete entertainer and I hope the audience appreciates it," he said.

Apart from "Kambakkht Ishq", Akshay will also be seen in "Blue", "De Dana Dan" and "Action Replay".

Neil: Katrina, John and I are good friends

New York revolves around three friends living in New York whose lives change completely following 9/11. Neil Nitin Mukesh talks about his character in the film and working with John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Irrfan Khan and Kabir Khan.

On his character in New York
My character is extremely important. Omar is one of the protagonists. He hasn’t really witnessed life and he gets an opportunity to go and witness life. The transformation of a vulnerable boy to a man is shown in the film.

On his rapport with Katrina and John
We had a blast on the sets. We never realized we were making an intense film. We share strong on screen chemistry because off screen, the three of us are very good friends.

I think amongst the three of us, Katrina is the best dancer. She is versatile, flexible and fit.

On Kabir Khan
Kabir is a great director. He is a National award winning director. If it wasn’t for him, the film wouldn’t have been made. It is an intelligent film with strong characters, drama, life, mystery and thrill. New York will even surpass Kabul Express, which I think was brilliant. There is a message that Kabir has left at the end of the film. It will hit people when they see it. Any Indian would be proud watching this film.

On his career so far
I consider myself fortunate to have done such diverse films like Johnny Gaddaar, Aa Dekhen Zara and now New York so early on in my career. These films have given a certain edge to my character and I feel responsible to deliver as an actor. The script is the most important thing for any actor. Characters can only work if the film works on the basis of a strong script.

On working with Irrfan Khan
It was an honour being in the same frame as Mr. Irrfan Khan because he is a legendary actor. He has surpassed all boundaries and reached international fame today. Just watching him act teaches you so much. He is an institution of acting in himself.

I was myself in New York: Katrina

Having already created a buzz with her 'no make up' look in the promos of her forthcoming venture "New York", Katrina Kaif says her character Maya in the movie is a reflection of what she is in real life.

"The first brief that I got from my director (Kabir Khan) was that 'it (the character) is the Katrina whom you have not seen in other films... She is not the one by whom you are intimidated when you see her'. I have just been myself in the film," Katrina told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.

"I was told 'look at yourself, the personality you have and the things you go through in real life'... Of course, the situations would be different but Maya is what Katrina is off-screen. She is what I'm in real life," she added.

Asked if it was a deliberate effort to have a deglamorised look in the film, she said: "When I hear the word deglamorised, I think of someone who has put mud on the face and is wearing dirty clothes... It's not a deglamorised role... It's a very realistic role where I bring out what I am in reality."

Portraying her real characteristics in the movie was also a "different experience" for the 24-year-old. "It was a kind of a challenge in itself, but it was the most wonderful part too," she said.

Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films, "New York" is releasing June 26 worldwide.

Apart from Katrina, it stars John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh in male leads with Irrfan Khan in a pivotal role.

Set in New York, the narrative spreads over nine years. It tells the story of three young friends whose lives take an unexpected turn after 9/11.

"My brief was very clear that Maya is not a Muslim and also that 9/11 attacks are only a backdrop to the film, after which their (the three friends') lives change and take a turn... it's about their emotional journey in the film than anything else," she said.

The Britain-born model-turned-actress' career soared to heights after she gave four back-to-back hits in 2007 - "Namastey London", "Apne", "Partner', "Welcome" and the first hit of 2008 "Race" in which Katrina played a character with shades of grey. She continued the winning streak with the comedy "Singh Is Kinng".

Apart from honing her acting skills, Katrina has also begun dubbing her movies on her own with an improved Hindi accent.

"I choose to dub on my own and make the efforts. I try to make it sound correct. Where some other artist might take three days to dub, I take six days, but I am trying very hard," she averred.

Katrina also denied taking Hindi classes.

"I don't think I need to take Hindi lessons."

After predominantly juggling with comedy, Katrina has moved to serious roles with "New York" and Prakash Jha's "Rajneeti".

"I've just arrived at a point where I am being offered diverse films," said Katrina who was last seen in Subhash Ghai's dud "Yuvvraaj".

Her future projects include a bevy of big-budget ventures like "Blue", "De Dana Dan" and "Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani".

The actress is content with her career.

"Everything is given to us by god. All you can do is work hard towards something. I've always believed in that and have always tried staying professional and given my best. And I love criticism... you have to take it constructively and move ahead in life," she said.

So when I cry I have to cry real tears but make sure they come across as funny First of all the lines are not comic in the dubbing theatre. So I’ve to recreate the laughter on the sets in a studio without knowing if I am being funny enough.” For Katrina it’s excruciating. “I don’t know whether I’m getting it right or not. I’m doing the dubbing under supervision. But this is the most difficult film I’ve dubbed for.” Now that she’s almost finished dubbing she plans to go through the entire dubbing in Santoshi’s film and re-do the portions Santoshi isn’t satisfied with. A bigger challenge now awaits Katrina. In Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti she must recreate all the rhetorics that she mouthed on stage in front of thousands of spectators. as a female politician. “The speeches I made have been taped. Katrina Kaif is miffed with Imran Khan?

Since last few days Mumbai tabloids have been carrying reports about how a miffed Katrina Kaif has walked out of Sanjay Gadhvi’s 7 Days in Paris because of her to be co-star Imran Khan’s constant interference in the scripting. Looking back at her career Katrina says that she considers her journey so far as a learning experience. "I went through a learning phase and I consider myself lucky to have learnt discipline from my co-stars Akshay Kumar, Govinda, Salman. They have helped me to strengthen my fundamentals, " she said. "But if you stagnate, the growth is over. I have done many comedy films. Success of films like Partner, Singh is Kinng gets you to a very wide audience reach. But for greater gains, you need to take greater gambles. If it works, you get respect and recognition, " Katrina said. Katrina is optimistic about her upcoming Yashraj film New York with John Abraham and Niel Nitin Mukesh, which is releasing on June 26. "When I first asked director Kabir Khan about my character, he told me that Maya is like every girl... she is you without make up and costumes. I realised that he was telling me to be myself in the film, " Katrina said. "When I saw the film last week, I saw me. I can't be myself in every movie of mine. But when that happens, the film has to be special. I was taken aback at Kabir's grasp of the subject and story telling style, " she said. The actress feels that the audiences should not go with pre-conceived notions to watch New York. "The film has all Indian emotions, but its narrative is very English movie style. New York may not be a typical masala entertainer, but has all the right ingredients to connect with the audiences, " the actress said. Katrina may have signed hard-core films like Rajniti and Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani but she does not want to be part of preachy, art house movies because she believes that cinema is a medium to entertain. The star feels that it is time for her to give 100 per cent priority to her career at present because she does not want to be complacent and disappoint her audiences. "I am not working to earn a living, but I am living movies. I am finding me enjoying the process, " she said. 'Aajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani' with Ranbir Kapoor will be her next release, followed by Akshay Kumar's De Dana Dhan. "We will start shooting for Rajniti from August end. So far, we have shot the political portions in Bhopal, " she added.

No Sallu at Kat’s b’day!

How could anybody forget the incident that threatened to split Bollywood down the middle with that other Khan, Aamir, doing his best and failing to patch up the prickly differences that cropped up and still exist between Sallu and SRK! Well, it’s birthday time again, and this year, the sensitive Katrina, who is under a lot of pressure already within and outside Bollywood, seems determined to make her party a happy, safe and stress-free occasion.

The actress is taking off for a rare, full-family reunion in London this July to coincide with her birthday on the 19th. Katrina, while not admitting that the idea is to keep out Salman, has confirmed that she is planning a family holiday in July. “I’ve been burning the midnight oil to make myself free for my family and I’m exhausted and stressed. I can’t wait to go home. Though I’ve met parts of my family on every visit, all of us eight siblings have not been together in nine years... can you believe it! I really want to do this,” said the actress.

She’s the middle sister among seven girls of the Kaif family and has always said it was a traumatic experience to wrench herself away from this family cocoon in London and make a career on her own in Mumbai. According to close friends, Katrina was petrified of the isolation in her adopted place of residence. That’s why when Salman’s family took her in their fold, she reciprocated their affection and remains eternally grateful to them.

Today, the fact that she wants to return home and rejoin her family on an occasion when Salman last year created major embarrassment to her, suggests Katrina’s trying hard to gently move away from her adopted family in Mumbai. She, of course, will be the last to admit this. To BT, the gorgeous actress just said, “I’m so looking forward to being with my sisters. My brother is also going to be in London for the first time in years with all of us sisters. It’s not a holiday for me. It’s a necessity. And nothing can stop me from making it happen.”
